How to create a beachy vibe for your home

13 October 2019

With summer just around the corner, many of us are starting to think about lazy days at the beach – especially here in South East Queensland! There’s nothing like escaping to the coast to feel relaxed, but have you thought about creating a beachy getaway at home? Getting a breezy, coastal vibe is easier than you think. Take a look at the decorator tips below, and make your home feel like a beach house this summer.

Lighten up

Nothing says the beach like white walls. They create a light, bright backdrop for you to create an authentic beach house feel. If stark white is not your thing, try a creamy white. It’s a little softer and still works well with a coastal style.

Add greenery

Placing palms, ferns and orchids around your home is the perfect way to make it feel like the tropics. Use natural cane or white wicker baskets instead of pots to keep the beachy vibe going.

Swap coloured linen for all white

White towels and bedding not only help to create a breezy, coastal look, but they also make your home feel instantly luxurious. Why do you think most resorts have all-white linen? It also provides a fresh look and feel that doesn’t cost a fortune!

Turn your deck into a tropical oasis

Clear the clutter off your deck, invest in some wicker furniture (or weather-proof furniture that looks like wicker). Add some colourful outdoor cushions, and then all you need is a cocktail to really get those holiday feels!

Add pops of colour

Choose bright, whimsical tones that remind you of carefree days at the beach, such as blue, coral and green. If you’re into patterns, consider a palm tree print or perhaps some nautical stripes.

Install a hanging chair or hammock

Chances are you’ve got a quiet space somewhere that would be the perfect spot to hang a hammock or swing chair. If hanging a chair isn’t an option, consider buying a swing chair that comes with its own stand. Got a quiet, shady spot in the garden? Why not string up a hammock between two trees – before you know it, you’ll have the perfect place to unwind on lazy summer afternoons.

Add textured floor coverings

Choose rugs made from natural fibres, such as sisal, sea grass, jute or bamboo. They look great on white tiles and timber floors, and you can pick them up quite cheaply at stores like Kmart and Target.

Bright and breezy windows

Replace formal sheers or blinds with woven, bamboo or linen shades to bring a casual ambience to any room. Roman blinds are an affordable option and fold up neatly to let in lots of natural light.

Slip into something comfy

Slipcover furniture brings a casual feel to any room. Fabrics can be changed with the seasons and covers can be removed for easy cleaning. Natural fibres such as linen are perfect for beach-inspired upholstery and curtains. Its texture and neutral colour palette provides the perfect backdrop for brighter accent pieces, such as cushions and artwork.

Accessorise with beach-themed books

Look for coffee table books with a beach or seaside theme. Stack them on your coffee table accompanied by a bowl of shells and a scented candle to create the perfect coastal vignette.

Bring in the ocean breeze

Nothing makes you feel like you’re at the beach more than a refreshing ocean breeze. Fill the air with sea-inspired fragrances. Add a fragrance diffuser to the room, or light an aromatic candle to bring those beachside scents into your home, no matter where you live!
